My IT experience at the lifthub

My Experience at the Lifthub

It promised to be a pleasant experience from the day we went to make inquiries. The lovely Mrs. Emmanuella welcomed us. She then briefed us on the courses they offered at The Lifthub and took us upstairs to meet our “tutors-to-be”. She signed our SIWES letters and we agreed to start at the beginning of the week.

I did a web development course. We did mostly backend development. I brushed up on the frontend on my own. My first tutor was Mr. Tony. He is really good at what he does. He started with teaching python. Then we moved to the django framework. We had classes twice each week, but I would come every day. The environment at the Lifthub is very conducive for learning. So even when I did not have classes, I would still come to work on some of my personal projects or just read. The tutors are very friendly and approachable. I was able to flow quickly with Mr. Tony in his python lectures because I had already made some progress on my own. So we just breezed over the basics. Then we moved to more advanced topics like list comprehension, OOP (Object-oriented programming) and GUI with “tkinter”. Below is a GUI login page I built with the “tkinter” and “OS” libraries.

After the holiday, Mr. Jamal, J-money, as we fondly call him, became my tutor. We started off with the basics of django. After some time, switched to Flask, mostly because it was easier to understand and less complicated than Django. Flask was much easier to understand. Below is a code snippet from the first flask app I wrote:

from flask import Flask

app = Flask(__name__)

@app.route(‘/’)

def hello_world():

return ‘Hello World’

if __name__ == ‘__main__’:

app.run()

With time, I learned how to link HTML/CSS files to build a web app and deploy to herokuapp to make it live. It was fun learning new things, but it was more fun being at the Lifthub. I see the Lifthub as a home away from home. A place where I could go to have peace of mind and healthy association, and good food! The canteen downstairs always came to the rescue when we were hungry. So when I was told about the full internship program, I was filled with excitement. It meant that I would get to continue building my skills and have capable hands to put me through. If I had to repeat my IT, I would still choose the Lifthub.

I like to use this medium to say a big thank you to the management; The CEO, Mr. Okorn Okorn, our tutors, Mr. Jamal, Mr. Samson, Mr. Tony, the “food guys”, and the entire of lifthub for a time really worth the while.
